Working In Retail
I have found working as a woman hard. I was a housewife for about 15 yrs til my husband lost his job and I was forced to go to work to help out with the income. I had 2 small children who I hated to leave to go to work. So it was a hard decision to make which I know for a lot of mothers it is a hard to leave them everyday to go to work. I didn't have any real experience in any field or any training to be anything, all I knew was being a wife and mother. I thought what could I do? I started applying everywhere, nothing. The only thing I had ever done was sell cosmetics door to door being a Avon Representative. So I used that on my job applications, I finally found a part time job at Kmart doing stocking and then a door greeter. I stayed there for about 3 yrs til I left to go to work at Walmart. There I became a cashier. I had never done anything like that before. I have always been pretty shy, so it was hard for me to get use to working in the public eye. I was shocked by how many people come through your line and some of them are very sincere to you but then you have the complainers who are just rude and hardly have a kind word to say to you. I even had people who would come through with their cell phones, never saying a word to you or a thank you, just talking a mile away on that crazy cell phone. Does that sound familiar? But most of all it was rewarding, one of the most rewarding jobs you can think of. You come across those who make you smile and who you have made a difference in their day. Sometimes you may be the only one that has paid attention to them all day. I wish those who make up the pay salaries for retailers like the cashiers, the stockers, the bag boys, the parking lot attendants, the door greeters, etc. would give these people more income. You have to think about it, most of these people are making less than $10 an hr or slightly more, but not enough to make a living. And it doesn't make it if you have a wife, husband, or kids. These people need raises since they have to put up with a lot from customers and they are what brings business to the retail stores. It's not just the merchandise that brings in the customers, it's the people. And without the people you have no business. And customers, you need to think about it, these people are there helping you and putting up with many people who aren't very friendly, so next time when you get mad at them, think twice, it's not the cashiers fault that the price is wrong or the ice cream has melted, etc. Let's show these people some courtesy, then you may have better service all around. And to the bosses, please give these people more raises. They deserve it since they are doing it for you and bring in the business for you. |
